Shaquille O'Neal elaborates on recent Zion Williamson criticism

Shaquille O'Neal recently criticized Zion Williamson due to his apparent lack of physical conditioning. The former Los Angeles Lakers star noted how he had similar struggles to begin his own career. When questioned about O'Neal's comments, Williamson noted how everybody is entitled to their own opinion. However, O'Neal has since looked to elaborate on his comments in an attempt to provide context.

"I'm the president when it comes to being the dominant big man," O'Neal said. "There is no other. There was another, rest in peace, Mr. Wilt Chamberlain. When it comes to being a dominant big man, I am the authority, I am the go-to guy. I sat there and watched him. I said, 'he doesn't run hard. He doesn't create easy baskets for himself. And he looks like he's not ready.' That was me telling him that 'if you do this, you will get to the next level.' We only criticize people that we like."

Williamson is currently averaging 22 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 57.8% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. He's played as both a primary and secondary offensive option this season. Yet, for the most part, Williamson has looked engaged and ready to compete at the highest level.

However, he cannot escape the questions surrounding his nutrition, diet and workout regime. The common narrative is that he's overweight, and it's putting too much stress on his body, which is why he's missed so much time since entering the league.

There's no doubt that Williamson can develop into one of the most dominant forwards in the NBA. His size, strength and elite second jump make him a unique proposition for any defense to deal with. The only thing holding him back is his inability to remain on the court.

O'Neal's comments were fair, and clearly, he intended them to motivate Williamson to make some changes in his approach to the game. Whether the 23-year-old heeds that advice will be something we learn in the coming years.
